Universal Thermodynamics of a Strongly Interacting Fermi Gas

چکیده
We study the properties of an optically-trapped, Fermi gas of Li atoms, near the center of a broad Feshbach resonance, where strong interactions are observed. Strongly interacting Fermi gases exhibit universal behavior, and are of interest as models of exotic systems ranging from high temperature superconductors to neutron stars and quark-gluon plasmas. We measure the frequency and damping rate of the radial breathing mode of the trapped gas and consider quantum viscosity as a damping mechanism. We also demonstrate that the virial theorem holds and measure the heat capacity. In the experiments, energy is precisely added to the gas and an empirical temperature is determined from the spatial profiles of the cloud. Transitions are observed in both the damping rate and the heat capacity, measured as functions of the empirical temperature. Recent theory, using a pseudogap formalism, enables the first temperature calibration, and shows that the observed transition temperatures are close to that predicted for the onset of superfluidity in a strongly attractive Fermi gas.

Measurement of the entropy and critical temperature of a strongly interacting Fermi gas.
We report a model-independent measurement of the entropy, energy, and critical temperature of a degenerate, strongly interacting Fermi gas of atoms. The total energy is determined from the mean square cloud size in the strongly interacting regime, where the gas exhibits universal behavior. The entropy is measured by sweeping a bias magnetic field to adiabatically tune the gas from the strongly ...

Fermi gases, collections of fermions such as neutrons and electrons, are found throughout nature, from solids to neutron stars. Interacting Fermi gases can form a superfluid or, for charged fermions, a superconductor. We have observed the superfluid phase transition in a strongly interacting Fermi gas by high-precision measurements of the local compressibility, density, and pressure. Our data c...
متن کاملIs an Ultra-Cold Strongly Interacting Fermi Gas a Perfect Fluid?
Fermi gases with magnetically tunable interactions provide a clean and controllable laboratory system for modeling interparticle interactions between fermions in nature. The s-wave scattering length, which is dominant a low temperature, is made to diverge by tuning near a collisional (Feshbach) resonance. In this regime, two-component Fermi gases are stable and strongly interacting, enabling te...
متن کاملMeasurement of universal thermodynamic functions for a unitary Fermi gas.
Thermodynamic properties of matter generally depend on the details of interactions between its constituent parts. However, in a unitary Fermi gas where the scattering length diverges, thermodynamics is determined through universal functions that depend only on the particle density and temperature. By using only the general form of the equation of state and the equation of force balance, we meas...

The theoretical community is in the midst of unraveling the nature of resonantly interacting fermionic superfluids (S1–S9) with particular emphasis on the strongly interacting Fermi gas (S10). In the BCS-BEC crossover picture (S11), the strongly interacting Fermi gas is intermediate between the weak coupling BCS and BEC limits. In addressing the nature of the excitations from the conventional m...
